Yesterday afternoon I spent a couple of hours with a Locality Project Officer from Surrey County Council showing her around Westborough. We started off at the Park Barn Centre, where we saw an Olympics celebration afternoon and met the Tracy James, the Community Safety Warden and Rodney Bates who heads up the Wardens team at Guildford.
We walked past Kings College, The Spinney and Guildford Grove round to the former Pond Meadow School site. Despite the sun, the site looked very delapidated and a sheer waste of a facility which could be used by the community for so many activities. From Pond Meadow we walked through to the Park Barn Community Centre which is used by a lot of local groups such as the Barn Youth Project, Westborough Women and Surrey Lifelong Learning Partnership. Then back to the car, via Cabell Road – still not repaired.
After that we got in the car and headed along Southway where we went and had a look at the Playbuilder in Westborough Woods. We met a lady with her grandchildren. The children were having a great time but she was finding it difficult to find somewhere to sit. Perhaps we need to look at putting some sort of seat for the adults who visit.
The next site we visited was Stoughton Rec. It looked absolutely lovely in the sunshine and there were people using all the play equipment as well as quite a few families on the grass. After all the rain we’ve had, it was great to see people able to get out.
Then, back in the car and onto look at the Aldershot Road allotments site from the car park at the bottom and the Westborough Open Space project at the top.
Jane commented quite often at how well laid out the ward is and that we have quite a lot of good things going on. She’s quite right. There is still a lot to do but we mustn’t lose sight of what we have already.
